CAA expands the credit note scheme for ATOL

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has announced that it would extend the ATOL refund credit notes scheme until the end of the year.

In July, following confirmation from the Transportation Department, the ATOL scheme declared that refund credit notes issued for cancelled ATOL covered bookings as a result of Covid-19 will be protected.

This defense was originally extended to the refund of credit notes issued between 10 March and 30 September this year.

However the scheme is now in a position to declare that ATOL's coverage of reimbursement credit notes has been extended to cover all credit notes issued between the beginning of October and 31 December.

Consumers are entitled to a cash refund if they are not eligible for a refund credit note and are entitled at any stage to exchange their refund credit note for cash.

However, due to the expiry of the ATOL cover for their refund credit note on the 30th of September next year they can reclaim or swap a refund before that date.

"While consumers who have had their holidays cancelled are entitled to a full cash refund, some may choose to accept a refund credit note," Paul Smith, consumer director at the UK CAA, said.

"In view of the continued impact of the coronavirus pandemic on travel, the decision to extend ATOL's reimbursement credit notes coverage will reinforce consumer confidence and enable ATOL holders to continue to offer ATOL credit notes to their customers in good faith."

"He added: "Travel companies should ensure that if they provide coupons or refund credit notes to their customers after December 31, they provide specific information in the deal as to what cover, if any, applies.
